RPAC: A REALTOR'S Best Investment in Real Estate
The REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) is the only political action committee in the country dedicated to furthering the real estate industry. Since its inception over forty years ago, RPAC has worked to ensure that the real estate industry speaks with a unified voice, and continues to provide an influential political presence in our nation's capital, state legislatures and local governments.
The Oregon REALTORS® Political Action Committee (ORPAC) and the Central Oregon Association of REALTORS® Political Action Committee (COARPAC) are RPAC's state and local partners that have the sole purpose of ensuring that the "Voice of Real Estate" is heard in Salem and locally.
Since 1969 RPAC has promoted the election of pro-REALTOR® candidates across the United States. The purpose of RPAC is clear: REALTORS® raise and spend money to elect candidates who understand and support their interests. The money to accomplish this comes from the voluntary contributions made by REALTORS®. These are not members' dues, but money given freely by REALTORS® in recognition of how important campaign fundraising is to the political process. RPAC doesn't buy votes. RPAC enables REALTORS® to support the issues that are important to their profession and livelihood.
From 2004 to 2009, RPAC raised over $30 million dollars to support pro-REALTOR® candidates running for Congress. The amount of money RPAC spends to support candidates makes it the number- one trade association PAC in the nation. REALTORS® are a key part of the American dream: homeownership. But now, more than ever, REALTORS® are facing forces from many directions that threaten their profession. Property tax burdens, lack of available financing and difficulties in short sales transactions are only a few of the issues that somewhere, every day, REALTORS® confront when selling a home. RPAC allows REALTORS® to make sure their concerns about these issues are heard and understood by public officials.
Here in Oregon the PAC's are no less important. ORPAC helps support candidates for state office who share REALTORS® concerns about housing affordability, business practices, health insurance availability and an improved land use system. The Oregon REALTORS® Government Affairs team has helped modernize real estate license laws, protected REALTORS® from frivolous litigation, reform land use laws, and protected homeowners from real estate transfer taxes.
Locally, COARPAC has played a key role in helping COAR's Government Affairs program to ensure that REALTORS® can reasonably use real estate signs to serve their clients, to urge local governments to maintain the statutorily required 20-year supply of land, to fight for housing affordability by opposing rising permit fees and SDCs, to oppose and combat the negative effects of anti-business and no-growth public policies. In 2008, COARPAC supported 85% of the winning candidates in Central Oregon, including many who defeated incumbents.
COARPAC, ORPAC and RPAC are essential to ensure that the "Voice of Real Estate" is heard by elected and appointed officials at all levels of government.
